In the dark, poetic tragedy Girls’ Encounter, Mayuri is a victim of relentless school bullying who suffers from selective mutism. Her only solace is a silkworm she names Tsumugi, until the creature is taken from her. Soon after, a mysterious transfer student also named Tsumugi arrives, forming an intense, ethereal bond with Mayuri. Often compared to a darker version of Hana and Alice, this Japanese LGBTQ+ film explores the fragile intersection of youth, isolation, and salvation. As the lines between reality and fable blur, the girls seek refuge in a world that refuses to let them stay.
