Hiya all, today I’ve got something a little different and very special to share with you all…
Finally released from the depths of my hard drive is my 2023 short film ‘Where Colours Come From’. This short was made as my graduation film for the Filmmaking MA from London Film School, and it represents years of hard work, academic rigor, and creative passion. We filmed this on location in the stunning landscapes of Provence in France back in June 2022. This film was made possible by incredible support on Kickstarter, lots of which came from my subscribers here on this channel. I once again just want to express how truly grateful I have been for that generosity; without you, these frames would never have made it to the screen.
I made this film at a time when I was figuring out myself and my sexuality, and this narrative is very much an honest reflection of that journey. It’s also in a big way a romanticisation of the many summers I have spent in the French countryside and my evolving relationship to that environment and its unique light. We filmed in small villages near my parents’ house (which we used as our chaotic but loving base) and captured scenes in the beautiful home of some family friends (fOR FREE!!!!), which was an amazing experience that I am still eternally grateful for. Their hospitality allowed us to achieve a level of production value we only dreamed of.
This film was also very fun from a technical side as we chose to film on anamorphic lenses. These lenses are very flattering from a portrait perspective, perfect for capturing the intimacy between Mia and Heloïse, but they also give the film that dreamy, atmospheric, and cinematic feel that fits the heat of summer. The other very exciting thing—and a huge logistical hurdle—was filming underwater. It was a very fun challenge that required a lot of patience and specialized gear. And yes, we absolutely froze our asses off because we shot those sequences at night in a cold pool, but I hope you will agree the visual result was well worth the shivers.
It’s Pride here in London today (July 5th) so it felt like there was no better time to (finally) share this story with you. This film is my heart on a sleeve, exploring the vibrant spectrum of where our own “colours” originate. Thank you again for all the support, your comments, and your patience while I finished this. I truly hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it!
All my love and all my gratitude,
– Emma x
