In this clip from the 1999 Sundance favorite Joe the King, Mrs. Basil (Camryn Manheim) subjects young Joe Henry (Peter Anthony Tambakis) to a stinging public humiliation during Career Day. Directed by Frank Whaley, this gritty coming-of-age drama explores the harsh realities of growing up in an impoverished, abusive household. As Joe struggles with the shame of his father’s reputation and a bleak domestic life, his childhood innocence begins to fracture. Featuring powerful performances by Val Kilmer and Ethan Hawke, the film offers a poignant, semi-autobiographical look at a boy forced to navigate a world that offers him little mercy.
